How to Get the Most Out of Personal Training Sessions at Your Gym

Hiring a personal trainer is one of the best investments you can make in your fitness journey. But it’s also one of the most expensive — typical PT rates in the UK range from £30 to £80 per session. So how do you make sure you’re getting real value for that money?

Whether you’ve just booked your first session or you’re a seasoned PT client looking to maximise results, here’s how to get the most out of every minute with your trainer.

Before Your First Session

  • Know your goals. “Get fitter” is too vague. Be specific: “I want to deadlift 80kg in 3 months” or “I want to lose 5kg and run 5K without stopping.”
  • Be honest about your history. Injuries, medical conditions, exercise experience — tell your trainer everything. They can’t programme safely if they don’t know the full picture.
  • Check their qualifications. In the UK, look for Level 3 Personal Trainer certification (REPs registered or CIMSPA member). Specialists should have additional qualifications in areas like strength and conditioning, nutrition, or rehabilitation.
  • Ask about their approach. Good trainers will explain their methodology. If someone promises unrealistic results or pushes supplements, that’s a red flag.

During Your Sessions

  • Show up on time and warmed up. If you arrive 5 minutes early and do some light cardio, your trainer can spend the full session on productive work rather than warming you up.
  • Ask questions. “Why are we doing this exercise?” is the best question you can ask. Understanding the reasoning helps you train smarter on your own.
  • Communicate how things feel. Pain vs effort is a critical distinction. Sharp pain = stop. Discomfort from effort = normal. Your trainer needs your feedback to adjust intensity.
  • Put your phone away. You’re paying for focused attention. Give the same focus back.
  • Trust the process. Your trainer has programmed your sessions for a reason. Resist the urge to cherry-pick exercises you enjoy and skip the ones you don’t.

Between Sessions

One or two PT sessions a week isn’t enough on its own. What you do between sessions matters just as much.

  • Do your homework. Most trainers give you workouts to complete independently. Do them. This is where the real progress happens.
  • Track your nutrition. PTs aren’t dietitians (unless qualified), but most can offer basic nutritional guidance. Follow it.
  • Log your workouts. Record weights, reps, and how you felt. This data helps your trainer adjust your programme.
  • Sleep and recover. Your muscles grow during rest, not during training. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep.

How to Tell if Your PT Is Working

Results take time, but you should see measurable progress within 4-6 weeks:

  • Increasing weights or reps in key exercises
  • Improved energy levels and mood
  • Changes in body measurements (even if the scale doesn’t move)
  • Better movement quality and reduced pain
  • Consistently completing your independent workouts

If you’re not seeing any progress after 6 weeks, have an honest conversation with your trainer. A good one will adjust the programme. If they’re defensive or dismissive, it might be time to find someone new.

For Gym Owners: Building a Profitable PT Business

Personal training is one of the highest-margin revenue streams for UK gyms. Here’s how to maximise it:

  • Hire quality trainers — your PT team is a reflection of your gym. Vet qualifications and run trial sessions.
  • Offer PT packages — bundle sessions (e.g., 10 for the price of 8) to improve retention and upfront revenue
  • Create a PT-friendly environment — dedicated floor space, Olympic platforms, and enough equipment to avoid conflicts with members
  • Promote PT on your GymPal listing — mention your PT services on your listing so potential members know you offer coached training

The right personal trainer can transform your fitness. Search for PTs and gyms with coaching services on GymPal and invest in yourself.
